SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's swimming and diving team opened the 2023-24 season with a dominating sweep over Division II schools Roberts Wesleyan University and the College of St. Rose on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gym Pool. The Garnet Chargers defeated Roberts Wesleyan 173-65 and also knocked off St. Rose by a 142-87 score.
Union was all over the leaderboard on Saturday, posting nine first-place finishes in 13 events and 21 top-three results in the first meet of the new season.
Seniors
Zack Panlilio and
Matt Kenvin both earned a pair of individual wins on the day, while four teammates - senior
Bill Megas, junior
Colin Farrell, sophomore
Drew Hill and first-year
Winston Lee - and one relay also came away victorious.
Panlilio won the 100-yard free handily with a time of 10:30.57, cruising to a nearly 40-second victory to earn the men's team's first win of the day. He then bookended his day with another win in the 500 free, winning by more than 14 seconds with a time of 5:05.15.
Kenvin earned his first win of the year in the 200 IM, with his time of 2:00.94 coming nearly five seconds ahead of St. Rose's Kaleb Hotaling. The senior also broke the minute mark in the 100 breast, touching the wall in 59.44 for a victory of more than 2.5 seconds.
Lee earned the first win of his collegiate career by finishing the 100 fly in 54.64 seconds, coming in first by two-hundredths of a second. Hill followed that up with a win in the 100 free, winning by more than a second in 50.02.
Union took three of the top-four spots in the 200 free, led by Megas' winning time of 1:48.42. Lee placed second in 1:50.59 and first-year
Gavin Baltes added a fourth-place finish, clocking in at 1:54.55.
Megas and Lee both were part of the winning 200 free relay as well, joining Baltes and senior
Zach Matthews to finish in 1:31.23, more than four seconds ahead of the Union B relay of Panlilio, classmates
Jonathan Osma and
Andre Thornton, and junior
Tony Piacentini.
Farrell added to the Union win total by compiling 234.90 points in the 3-meter diving event to take top honors in the five-diver field.
Union will look to keep the momentum going on Saturday with another home meet against Liberty League foe Clarkson University beginning at 1 p.m. at Alumni Gym Pool.
