TROY, N.Y. – The Union College softball team posted a near perfect 3-1 record to kick off their home stand thanks in part to Senior
Olivia Valery, who was named Liberty League Player of the Week, and first-year
Ellie Wintringer, the Liberty League Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon. Union swept SUNY Cobleskill before earning a split with Utica University.
Valery posted an impressive .416 batting average in the four games. She scored five runs, hit two doubles, a home runs, and totaled 10 RBI. Valery went 3-4 in the doubleheader against Cobleksill. She launched a three-run home run to left field to give Union a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one as Union cruised to a 17-0 win. Valery totaled three RBI and two runs scored in game one. In game two She doubled down the line in the first inning to give Union a 3-1 lead and plating two runners. After all was said in done, she totaled seven RBI in the series with Cobleskill. In the first game against Utica, Valery doubled in a runner from second in the bottom of the seventh inning that kick started a rally to force extra innings, in a game Union won 10-9 in eight innings.
This is Valery's second weekly award win of her career, the other being named Liberty League Rookie of the Week in 2021.
Wintringer batted .400 in the four games this weekend. The rookie infielder drove in four RBI, added two doubles and four runs scored. In the Cobleskill series, Wintringer hit a sac-fly to push Union's lead to 5-1, before singling in the third inning to give Union their tenth run. She singled in two runners in the opening frame to help Union jump out to a 3-0 lead against Utica.
Wintringer is Union's first Rookie of the Week since senior
Karson Saunders was named Rookie of the Week on May 3, 2021. Wintringer is the first, first-year to earn the honor since Rachel Noall, when she won Rookie of the Week on May 9, 2011.
Valery, Wintringer and the rest of the Dutchwomen get back on the field, on Friday, April 7, as they welcome in NESCAC opponent Middlebury for a doubleheader from Alexander Field. First pitch for game one is set for 3:30 p.m.
