Drach Announces Two Additions, One Promotion for Union Football Staff

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Head coach Jon Drach has announced two new hires and one promotion as the Union College football coaching staff takes shape ahead of the 2024 season.

Among new members of the staff, Anthony Trotta will take over as Defensive Coordinator and Terence Sino will serve as the Run Game Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach. In addition, Devin Smith has been elevated to a full-time position as Defensive Line Coach and Special Teams Coordinator.

"I have had the privilege of knowing Anthony and Terence for the last seven years," Drach said. "Both men have proven to be tireless workers and excellent leaders. We are excited to welcome them into the Union Football family.

"Devin has proven to be a valuable teacher and mentor for our Union student-athletes," Drach continued. "He has continued to develop over the last two years and will have a much more increased role on special teams as we head into 2024."

Trotta will reunite with Drach after serving as the Defensive Coordinator at Wilkes University for the last two seasons. Under his direction, the Colonels recorded five defensive touchdowns and finished the year with 23 sacks in 2023, while the 2022 team allowed only 18.3 points per game and boasted one All-Region pick and four All-Conference selections. In the last two years, Wilkes recorded 22 interceptions, 48 sacks and 129 tackles for loss.

Trotta started his collegiate coaching career at Wilkes in 2019 as the Defensive Line Coach and Video Coordinator, helping the team to an 8-3 record that marked the program's most wins in 13 years and the fourth-most ever in a season. He spent the following year at John Carroll University as coordinator of the special teams unit in 2020-21, and also served as Special Teams Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Oberlin College in 2021 before earning a promotion to Co-Defensive Coordinator after the season.

Trotta graduated from Wilkes University in 2017 with a degree in elementary and early childhood education. He was a member of the football for the Colonels serving as a special teams captain during his time in Wilkes-Barre.

"This a tremendous opportunity for me to serve the students and community of Union College," Trotta said. "Union is an elite academic institution and a historic football program that has consistently competed for championships. I consider it an honor to represent this institution and look forward to working alongside this coaching staff and these student-athletes, while immersing myself in the Union community.

"The opportunity to come to Union and continue to work for someone I really respect in Coach Drach has me very excited for the future," Trotta added. "He is a tremendous leader and an even better person. "

Sino comes to Union with six years of coaching and recruiting experience at the Division I level, including the last four years at Wagner College. He coached the offensive line and tight ends during his time on Staten Island, while also serving as Recruiting Coordinator for two seasons and earning the title of Assistant Head Coach during his final year with the team. He previously spent two seasons at Long Island University, serving as an offensive assistant and Recruiting Coordinator for the Sharks.

Sino graduated from Colgate University in 2017 and was a four-year member of the offensive line for the Raiders. He earned a master's of business administration from Wagner in 2022.

"I'm excited to join Coach Drach's staff and immediately get to work here at Union," said Sino. "It's an honor to become a part of Union College and its consistent and enduring success both in the classroom and on the football field. I look forward to building relationships with our players and our Union community this spring so we can continue to grow this excellent tradition."

Smith recently completed his second season as an assistant coach with Union in 2023, leading the team's defensive line. As a team, Union accumulated 21 sacks last season, with more than half (11.5) coming from the defensive line in the team's 3-4 defense, while limiting opponents to 11.4 points per game and just 69.2 rushing yards per contest. Union posted a combined record of 16-6 in his first two years, including the sixth 10-win season in program history in 2023.

"I am so excited for this opportunity in the next step of my career," Smith said. "I want to thank Coach Flanders and Coach Brown for taking me under their wing for the past two seasons and teaching me valuable lessons about life and football. I can't wait to work with Coach Trotta and Coach Sino; what they bring to the program is unmatched. I am looking forward to our players having the opportunity to begin writing the next chapter in the history of Union Football."

The 2024 Union football schedule will be released in the coming weeks, as the Garnet Chargers head into the first season of the Jon Drach era this fall.
