Women's Golf Battles Elements and a Tough Field at Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Union College women's golf team battled both the elements and a strong field on Sunday at the Cortland Martin and Wallace Invitational, carding a team round of 399 to finish 11th in a challenging 14-team field at Cortland Country Club.

After Saturday's first day of competition was postponed due to rain, teams had to battle through a lightning delay in addition to soggy conditions on Sunday. Union's round of 399 was five strokes better than St. Lawrence University in 12th place and just eight shots back of SUNY Geneseo for a spot in the top-10.

WGCA #4 Williams College carded a round of nine-over 297 to take top honors, five strokes ahead of New York University. Three other nationally ranked squads, #14 Amherst College (303), #21 Hamilton College (307) and #24 Middlebury College (309), rounded out a stacked top-five.

Junior Liz Bentsianov posted the team's top round of the day, carding a 12-over 84 to finish in a tie for 38th individually. Sophomore Shea White tied for 54th place with a round of 90, while junior Katerina Dimacopoulos finished with a 99. Sophomore Emily Evans also made her collegiate debut for the Garnet Chargers as well, carding a 126.

Union will return home for its final tuneup before the conference championship on April 20, when the team hosts St. Lawrence and the College of Saint Rose for a tri-match at Schenectady Municipal Golf Course.
