Union Cleans Up Liberty League Awards

TROY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team earned three major awards and led the way with eight all-league members as the Liberty League announced its All-League awards on Tuesday.

Sophomore Caleb Miller was named the Player of the Year, first-year Jack Collins was named the Rookie of the Year, and the coaching staff earned Coaching Staff of the Year honors.

The eight selections to the All-Liberty League team are the most for Union since the 2018 had nine players recognized.

Joining Miller on the first team is junior Kyle Zaslaw and sophomore Liam McIlroy. Collins and junior Sam Strazza both earned a spot on the second team while junior Chris Suter, senior Thomas Parisi, and senior Kobe Mentzer were named honorable mentions.

Miller was one of the top hitters for Union this season with a .374 average and a 1.081 OPS. The catcher started 37 games with 40 appearances total and went 58-155 with 12 doubles, four triples, seven home runs, 44 RBI and 44 runs scored. He recorded a 24-game hitting streak from March 25 to May 1. Miller earned a spot on the D3baseball.com Team of the Week and Liberty League Performer of the Week honors the week of April 22.

Collins had a stellar rookie season on the mound with a 6-1 record with nine starts and two complete games. The right-hander compiled a 4.45 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 56.2 innings pitched and held opposing batters to a .256 batting average. Collins earned Liberty League Rookie of the Week honors on April 8.

Head coach John Muller and his staff earns Coaching Staff of the Year honors in his first year at Union. Picked to finish third in the East Division, Muller and his staff guided Union to the second-seed in the division and a spot in the Liberty League Tournament. Union finished the season with a 29-12 record overall with a 12-5 record in conference play.

Zaslaw was one of three players to appear in all 41 games for Union this season. The third baseman registered a .354 batting average with 52 hits, two triples, five home runs, 44 RBI, and 42 runs scored. Zaslaw was the team leader in doubles with 13 and sac flies with five. The junior captain was a key part of the Union defense that turned 36 double plays.

McIlroy moves up to the All-Liberty League First Team after being named an honorable mention last season. The sophomore batted .354 with 58 hits, six doubles, five triples, 53 RBI, 58 runs scored, .689 slugging, and a 1.147 OPS. McIlroy broke Union's single season home run record with a grand slam against RPI in the Liberty League Tournament for his 13th tally of the year. McIlroy also set the single season record in runs scored with 58. McIlroy was honored twice as the Liberty League Performer of the Week and once on the D3baseball.com Team of the Week.

Strazza repeats as a second team honoree for the second year in a row. The junior batted a team-leading .446 in 35 games. Strazza had 45 hits with eight doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 36 RBIs, and 39 runs scored with a .772 slugging.

Suter earns his third All-Liberty League honor in his career. The junior went 6-3 with 11 starts and 15 appearances, two complete games and a shutout. He pitched a career-high 71.2 innings and struck out a career-high 44 batters. Suter held opposing batters to a .259 average. Suter earned Liberty League Pitcher of the Week honors, a spot on the D3baseball.com Team of the Week, and a National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division III Pitcher of the Week Honorable Mention this season.

Parisi earns his first All-Liberty League honor as a senior with 40 games played, primarily at center field. The senior captain had his best year as a senior with a .379 average to finish second on the team. He reached base in 43 consecutive games dating back to last season and also went on a 19-game hit streak from April 9 to May 5. Parisi led the team with 61 hit, eight doubles, two triples, 23 RBI, and 51 runs scored. He was first on the team with 12 stolen bases and recorded three sac flies and three sac bunts. Defensively, he had 105 put outs and helped turn three double plays. He earned Liberty League Performer of the Week on April 9 after batting .609 in five games.

Mentzer picks up his third career honor with an honorable mention nod. The outfielder appeared in all 41 games with a .365 batting average. Mentzer recorded 58 hits, 11 doubles, one triple, two home runs, 46 RBI, and 42 runs scored. The senior captain broke his own single-season walk record with 31 this season as well as Union's program record with 82.

Miller, McIlroy, Zaslaw, Strazza, Collins, and Suter are all slated to return to the lineup next season.
