DELMAR, N.Y. – Sophomore
Iyene Essien carded a three-over round of 73 to tie for third on the school's single-round scoring list and sit in seventh place individually after day one of the UAlbany Great Danes Invitational, held on Sunday at Normanside Country Club.
Playing as the only Division III school in a field that includes 13 Division III programs, Union shot a round of 363 on day one to sit in 14th place. Boston University shot a 286 to hold a six-stroke lead over the host Great Danes at the midway point of the event.
In a field with 74 Division I competitors, Essien sits in a seven-way tie for seventh after her Sunday 73, a mark that has been surpassed only twice before in program history. Playing on the par-70 course, her three-over-par finish is tied for fifth-best in program annals as well. Starting on the sixth hole, she posted back-to-back birdies on the par-five 9th and 10th holes to quickly move toward the top of the leaderboard, and carded nine pars and four bogies over the final 13 holes. Her two-under-par score on the par-fives was second-best in the field on the day.
Sophomore
Carinna Anastasio and first-year
Claire Giletta both carded rounds of 96 on Sunday, followed close behind by sophomore
Ella Golas with a 98 and a first-year
Emma Doherty with a 99.
The Garnet Chargers will be back on the course tomorrow for day two of the event, with the teams set for an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start.
