ROME, N.Y. – The Union College women's golf team sits in sixth place after day one of the Hamilton Women's Invitational, held on Saturday afternoon at Rome Country Club.
The Garnet Chargers carded a team round of 353 on day one, sitting in the middle of a crowded leaderboard that also includes SUNY Cortland (351) and St. Lawrence University (354) close by. Host Hamilton College leads after day one following a round of 310, two shots better than Ithaca College.
Sophomore
Iyene Essien shot a three-over 75 to sit in a tie for second place at the midway point of the weekend, tied with Helena Winterberg of Ithaca and one stroke back of Hamilton's Sydney Dweck. The sophomore had an up-and-down round that featured only seven pars overall and three birdies in her first seven holes. Her four birdies overall on the day was tied for the course-high.
Senior
Shea White sits in 28th place after day one following a round of 88. She provided the highlight of the day on her 15th hole of the day, the par-five 9th, carding one of the day's three eagles. After parting the fairway with a driver, she hit a six-iron from 150 yards to within 15 feet and then sunk the putt for the three.
Sophomore
Carinna Anastasio and first-year
Emma Doherty both shot rounds of 95 to tie for 37th place after the first day, while sophomore
Ella Golas came in two shots back in a tie for 40th with a 97. Playing as individuals, first-year
Claire Giletta also shot a 97 and senior
Delaney Fox carded a 99.
The team will be back on the course tomorrow for day two of the Hamilton Invitational beginning at 9:30 a.m.
