LEXINGTON, Ky. – Fresh off her second straight All-Liberty League first-team recognition, senior
Shannon McGrath earned the first All-Region honor for the Union College women's volleyball team since 2016 with a spot on the All-Region 3 first team, the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced on Wednesday morning.
McGrath is the seventh player in Union volleyball history to earn an AVCA All-Region first-team selection and the first since Kat Moeller '17 was recognized for the second time in her career in 2016.
A two-time All-Conference first-team selection and a four-time All-Conference honoree overall, McGrath finally earns All-Region recognition at outside hitter after leading the team in kills for the fourth consecutive year with 407. The senior finished third in the conference and fourth in the region in kills this season and also placed third in conference and sixth in region in points per set. Among Liberty League players, she ranked 12th in hitting percentage – and third among hitters with more than 500 attempts – as well as 10th in digs per set.
McGrath recorded at least eight kills in every match this season and reached double figures in 25-of-of-28 outings, while also finishing the year with 14 double-doubles. As a result, she finished second on the school's all-time single-season list in kills per set (4.24) and eighth in both single-season kills and hitting percentage (.264).
The senior captain completed her decorated career fifth all-time in kills (1,297) and second in kills per set (3.51) at Union. She helped the Garnet Chargers to a 67-48 record over her four years, including three conference tournament appearances and two berths in the Liberty League semifinals.
