SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – John Carroll has been named the next head coach of the Union College women's volleyball program, Director of Athletics
Jim McLaughlin '93 announced on Monday.
"We are very excited to have John come on board as our next women's volleyball head coach," McLaughlin said. "His work ethic, dedication and strong commitment to the overall well-being of his student-athletes was very apparent during the interview process and helped him to stand out among an excellent pool of candidates. John's experience has equipped him to sustain and improve on the momentum that our women's volleyball program has built up over the last few seasons, and I look forward to seeing him and the team continue that success."
"I want to thank Director of Athletics Jim McLaughlin, Associate AD
Beth Tiffany, Assistant AD
Wally Bzdell '94 and the rest of the search committee for allowing me the opportunity to lead the women's volleyball program at Union," Carroll said. "From the moment I stepped on campus, I could feel a sense of pride, community and commitment to excellence for all of our student-athletes. I cannot wait to get to work and continue to make Union Volleyball a contender year after year."
Carroll comes to Union after serving as the head coach for both the women's and men's programs at Sarah Lawrence College for the last three years. In his time in Bronxville, he helped the women's team to back-to-back Skyline Conference semifinal appearances and was named the Skyline Coach of the Year in 2024, posting a combined 45-35 record and mentoring eight All-Skyline selections in three seasons. Off the court, every member of the women's team was named to the Skyline Conference Academic Honor Roll in two of his three years as well. Carroll also became the winningest men's volleyball coach in the program's short history, guiding the program to 30 wins in almost three full seasons at the helm.
Prior to his time at Sarah Lawrence, Carroll spent two years as an assistant coach with both the women's and men's teams at Regis College from 2021-23 and one year as the lead assistant coach at Bethany College in 2020-21.
Carroll earned his bachelor's degree from Emmanuel College in 2020, following a four-year career with the Saints. He was a four-year starter on the court and still ranks fourth in program history in hitting percentage. Carroll also earned a master's of education in student success from Regis in 2023.
Carroll will assume his new position on April 15 and will take over a program that finished 22-9 last season and earned a top-two seed in the Liberty League Tournament with a 7-1 conference mark.
