DANBURY, Conn. – Senior
Shannon McGrath of the Union College women's volleyball team added one more accolade to her ledger on Thursday, earning a spot on the All-ECAC Division III second team, the Eastern College Athletic Conference announced.
An All-ECAC second-team selection as a first-year as well, McGrath is first Union volleyball player to earn multiple All-ECAC honors and remains the only player to be recognized since the ECAC changed away from a regional all-star model in 2017. Before McGrath, the last Union player to be recognized by the ECAC was Rachel Wyman '16, who was named a Metro/Upstate All-Star first-teamer in 2015.
A two-time All-Conference first-team selection and only the program's fourth four-time All-Conference honoree, McGrath was named to the AVCA All-Region first-team and an All-America honorable mention as a senior. She led the Garnet Chargers in kills for the fourth consecutive year with 407 while also ranking second on the team with 39 service aces and 290 digs, finishing third in the conference and fourth in the region in kills and also placing third in the conference and sixth in region in points per set. Among Liberty League players, she ranked 12th in hitting percentage – and third among hitters with more than 600 attempts – as well as 10th in digs per set.
McGrath recorded at least eight kills in every match this season and reached double figures in 25-of-of-28 outings, while also finishing the year with 14 double-doubles. As a result, she finished second on the school's all-time single-season list in kills per set (4.24) and eighth in both single-season kills and hitting percentage (.264). She ended her senior season ranked 12th in Division III in career kills among active players.
The two-year captain completed her decorated career fifth all-time in kills (1,297) and second in kills per set (3.51) at Union, and also graduates as one of six players in program history to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career. McGrath helped the Garnet Chargers to a 67-48 record over her four years, including three conference tournament appearances and two berths in the Liberty League semifinals.
