BOSTON, Mass. – Led by a new school record in the 200-meter dash by senior
Sam Ahern, all three runners representing the Union College men's indoor track & field team posted personal bests at the highly competitive John Thomas Terrier Classic, hosted by Boston University at the BU Track & Tennis Center on Saturday.
Union's performed well in all four events going up against top athletes from Division I, II and III as well as club and unattached competition.
Based on his times, Ahern qualified for the invitational portion of the dashes, reserved for only the top qualifying times. He proved that his spot was deserved by breaking his own program record in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in 21.89 to become the first Union runner to crack 22 seconds and best his previous mark by over a tenth of a second. His time placed him 14th out of 24 runners in the invite-only field, which featured only two Division III runners.
The senior also took 14th in the invite-only portion of the 60-meter dash, crossing the line in 7.04 seconds as the only D-III runner in the field.
First-year
Liam Fitzgibbon represented Union in the 800 meters and finished in the top-half of the competitive field, placing 71st out of 153 runners with a season-best time of 1:57.80. The time shaved over two seconds off his previous season best.
Senior
Ben Neff posted the best mile time of his career as well, taking over two seconds off his previous career best and earning himself a spot at the AARTFC Championships with a 4:19.11 finish. The senior finished in 144th place in the massive field of 281 runners.
Union will bring the full team back to competition next Saturday at the Utica Orange and Blue Invitational.
