NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Union College men's and women's indoor track & field teams competed in three more events on the second and final day of the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference Indoor Championships, held on Saturday afternoon at the Armory.
The men's team earned four points to finish in a tie for 34th, while the Union women finished in a tie for 23rd place at the end of the weekend.
The men's team had two entries on Saturday, with sophomore
Liam Fitzgibbon and junior
Michael Fitzmaurice both taking part in the 800 meters. Fitzgibbon earned a top-20 finish by crossing the line in 1:56.95, and Fitzmaurice came in a few spots back in 24th place with a time of 1:58.20.
The highlight of the weekend for the women was junior Ashley Sheldon, who matched her own program record by clearing 1.70 meters on her second attempt to win an AARTFC championship and firmly place her in the running for a third straight NCAA Championship appearance. The junior cleared her first three heights on the first opportunity, then cleared 1.67 meters on her second try to clinch a top-four finish. After all four competitors missed at their first shot at 1.70, Sheldon cleared the bar on her second try and watched the remaining three miss their third chance to take the title. She is one of nine Division III athletes to clear 1.70 meters this season and one of only two to do so in March.
Sheldon was joined on Saturday by sophomore Kyleigh Record, who ran the 800 meters in 2:20.61 to finish in the top-half of the 48-runner field in 23rd place.
The championships mark the end of the indoor for the Union men, who are slated to begin the outdoor season on March 28 at the Ramapo Invitational.
