SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior
Shea White earned individual medalist honors with a round of 79 to lead the Union College women's golf team to a 322-365 victory over St. Lawrence University in a dual match on Friday afternoon at Schenectady Municipal Golf Course.
Thanks to five rounds of 88 or under, the Garnet Chargers' team round of 322 is the lowest of the season and the second-lowest in program history, behind only a 319 shot at St. Lawrence in 2021.
White led the way for Union by tying the lowest round of her career on Friday to earn a one-stroke victory over four players. The junior made six pars and three bogeys to go out in a very steady 39, then started the back nine with a birdie on the par-four 10th. Three bogeys and one double the rest of the way allowed her to come away with her first career individual win.
"The sun came out for Senior Day and not only did both our seniors play great, all of their teammates followed suit on a windy afternoon," said head coach
Matt McPhillips. "The unity of this team is starting to show itself on the scoreboard and I couldn't be more proud of them. Especially for Shea, it was a great day for her first collegiate individual win."
Senior
Liz Bentsianov and first-year
Iyene Essien were two of the four players to finish the day in a tie for second at 80. Essien battled through an opening nine 42, then used five pars and a birdie on the par-three 17th to come in with a 38. Bentsianov went out in 39, helped by a birdie on the par-four 8th, and came in with four pars and five bogies for a back-nine 41.
Union finished the day with six of the top eight golfers in the field by taking the sixth, seventh and eighth spots on the leaderboard as well. First-year
Carinna Anastasio took sixth with a round of 83 that featured a day-high two birdies on the par-three 3rd and 13th holes. Senior
Katerina Dimacopoulos shot the best round of her collegiate career on Senior Day, carding an 88 to take seventh, and first-year
Ella Golas fired an 93 to place eighth.
Playing as individuals, juniors
Emily Evans and
Delaney Fox finished with rounds of 105 and 111, respectively, as well for Union.
Union will look to carry its momentum into next weekend's Liberty League Championships, which will be held next Saturday and Sunday at Pinehaven Country Club in nearby Guilderland, N.Y.
