SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sophomore
Iyene Essien earned individual medalist honors for the third straight event as the Union College women's golf team took second place out of five schools at the Union Fall Invitational, held on Saturday and Sunday at Mohawk Golf Club.
The Garnet Chargers carded the lowest score of the weekend with a 330 on Sunday to finish the weekend at 682, 17 strokes clear of SUNY Cortland in third place at 699. Ithaca College shot a 336 on Sunday to finish the two-day event at 673.
Essien followed up yesterday's 75 with an 80 on Sunday, earning her a three-stroke victory over St. Lawrence University's Sadie Cumming. The sophomore grinded through Sunday's second day, starting with a birdie on the opening par-five 1st hole. After going eight-over over the next 11 holes, Essien steadied herself with birdies on the par-five 12th and par-four 13th holes to secure the win. She finished the weekend an impressive four-under-par on the par-fives over the two days, one of only two players under par on the course's longest four holes, and had a weekend-best six birdies overall.
Senior
Shea White and sophomore
Carinna Anastasio both earned top-10 finishes for the home team as well. White had a round of 80 on Sunday to finish the weekend in a tie for fourth place at 167, carding 13 pars to go with three bogeys and two doubles in a very steady round. The senior finished the weekend third in the field with 17 pars over the 36 holes. Anastasio finished with an 83 on day two to end the weekend in 10th place at 175, coming in with a 41 thanks to three bogeys and one double in a steady back nine.
Sophomore
Ella Golas carded an 87 on Sunday to end in 16th place with a two-day score of 185, recording a pair of birdies in her round and coming in with a 39 on the back nine to move up the leaderboard. First-year
Emma Doherty finished her weekend with a 91 on day two to end up at 204, using a pair of birdies on the back nine to finish strong.
Playing as an individual, senior
Delaney Fox matched the low round of her career with a 96 on Sunday, posting a 50 on the front nine and a 46 on the back nine to finish the weekend at 200.
After taking next week off, Union will return to the course on October 4-5 at the Hamilton Fall Invitational.
