RIDGEFIELD, Conn. – The Union College women's golf team sits in ninth place after day one of the Wesleyan Fall Invitational, held on Saturday afternoon at Silver Spring Country Club.
The Garnet Chargers shot a 341 on Saturday, placing ninth out of 11 squads. The team is just two strokes behind Bates College for a spot in the top-eight and 21 strokes clear of Vassar College in 10th.
Junior
Carinna Anastasio was Union's low scorer on the day, carding an 11-over 81 on the par-70 course to tie for 26th place. The junior had an excellent round that was marred mostly by two bad holes, which somewhat canceled out a day that otherwise included 11 pars, one birdie and four bogeys. She closed with seven pars and one bogey as part of a back-nine 39. Anastasio was one of seven players in the 50-golfer field to play the par-threes at even-par or better on the day, and also tied for fifth in the field with her 11 pars.
Junior
Iyene Essien had a great start to her day with seven pars, one bogey and one double bogey as part of a front-nine 38, but shot a 45 on the back side to finish with an 83. Three strokes back of Essien is first-year
Casey Mack, who shot an 86 to sit in a tie for 39th.
Sophomore
Emma Doherty was Union's fourth scorer on the day with a round of 91, while junior
Ella Golas rounded out the team's quintet with a 102.
Union will be back on the course tomorrow morning, with its first tee times set to go off at 9:20 a.m.
