ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Union College women's indoor track & field team broke two program records and earned two points on day one of the Liberty League Indoor Track & Field Championships to sit in seventh place out of eight teams at the midway point of the weekend.
The Garnet Chargers finished day one 14.33 points back of Rochester Institute of Technology in sixth place with nine events still to go.
Junior
Ashley Sheldon reached the finals of the 60-meter hurdles by breaking her own program record for the second time this season, crossing the finish line in 9.11 seconds to finish fourth out of 18 runners. She was joined in the event by first-year
Benny Pierre Louis, who finished in 10.23 seconds.
Junior
Kat Doran joined Sheldon in breaking her own program standard in the 60-meter dash, shaving a full tenth of a second off her own mark by finishing in 8.087 seconds. Despite the new record, she came a mere three-thousandths of a second away from qualifying for the final, settling just barely for ninth place. Pierre Louis finished in 8.73 seconds for Union to place 20th in the event as well.
Union's only two points on day one came from the distance medley relay, as the quartet of junior
Devon Hardy, sophomores
Charlotte Knight and
Isla Langsdorf, and first-year
Eilis McKenna placed seventh with a time of 14:09.14.
First-year
Kate Monaco and sophomore
Kyleigh Record got the day started for Union in the mile, with Monaco just missing the top-10 with an 11th-place time of 5:29.47 and Record nabbing 14th in 5:39.56.
In the 5,000 meters, junior
Annabel Dobash placed 14th with a time of 18:54.87.
Sophomore
Lauryn Johnson represented Union in the field events on Friday, taking 20th in the shot put with a top mark of 8.67 meters
The Garnet Chargers will be back on the track tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m. for the second and final day of the Liberty League Championships.
