CANTON, N.Y. – Junior
Ashley Sheldon earned her second straight outdoor title in the high jump and set another program record in the 100 hurdles to lead the Union College women's outdoor track & field team to a seventh-place finish on the second and final day of the Liberty League Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held on Saturday at St. Lawrence University's Merrick-Pinkard Track & Field Complex.
Union scored all 31 of its points on day two to move up the rankings, finishing well ahead of Bard College in eighth place and 10.5 points behind the host Saints in sixth. Ithaca College took home the team title with 213 points, 32 points clear of the University of Rochester in second.
Sheldon has finished first or second in the high jump in all six conference championships of her three-year career, but in winning the high jump today she swept the indoor and outdoor events in the same season for the first time. After passing through the first three heights, she cleared the first 1.52-meter bar on her first try. She had a scare at 1.57 meters, needing her third and final try to stay alive, but after that cleared 1.62 meters on her first chance to take home the conference title.
Sheldon also started her day by taking almost two-tenths of a second off her own program record in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing fifth out of nine in the finals with a blazing time of 14.61 seconds that vaults her into the top-50 nationally.
