COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Union College women's outdoor track & field team finished strong with 15 points on the second and final day of the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference Championships, held at Ursinus College's Patterson Field on Thursday afternoon.
Union finished the two-day event with 19 points, scoring in five of the team's seven events to finish in a tie for 17th place out of 64 competing teams.
Junior Ashley Sheldon led the way for Union as usual in the high jump, taking second place with a top mark of 1.68 meters. She missed only one jump over her first four heights, clinching a top-two finish by clearing the bar at 1.65 meters on her second chance before getting over the 1.68m bar on her first try. Sheldon's leap puts her right on the cusp of qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, as eight jumpers entered the day in a tie for 13th nationally at 1.68 meters. The final selections will be revealed tomorrow on NCAA.com.
Sheldon also nabbed four points in her first event of the day, taking fifth in the 100-meter hurdles. She had her rhythm thrown off by a neighboring runner crashing into a hurdle toward the end of the race, but still managed to finish in 16.16 seconds.
Sophomore Kyleigh Record finished less than a second off her program-record pace in the 800 meters, winning her heat in 2:15.95 and finishing eighth overall out of 43 runners to earn one more point for her squad.
Junior Annabel Dobash started the day for Union in the 1,500 meters, finishing in a time of 4:50.17. The junior won her heat by over half a second and placed 12th overall out of 22 runners, far exceeding her 20th seed entering the event.
The day finished off with another two points coming in the 4x800-meter relay. The quartet of Record, Dobash, sophomore Bethel Flanagan and first-year Kate Monaco traversed the track in a combined 9:50.69, finishing right in the middle of the 13-team field in seventh place.
