CANTON, N.Y. – The Union College women's outdoor track team broke two program records and set itself up for plenty of future scoring on day one of the Liberty League Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held on Friday afternoon at St. Lawrence University's Merrick-Pinkard Track & Field Complex.
Union did not score in any of the six final events on Friday's first day, but still boasted nine season-best and four career-best performances while setting the stage for lots of good results tomorrow. Ithaca College recorded 70 points on day one to hold an 18-point lead over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Junior
Kat Doran started her weekend with a record-setting effort in the 100-meter dash, shaving over a tenth of a second off her own program record by finishing in 12.47 seconds. The time was good for eighth-best in the field, good enough for a spot in tomorrow's final, and also qualified her for the AARTFC Championships. First-year
Ava Gasson also ran the 100 for Union, clocking in at 13.66 seconds to place 24th.
Sophomore
Kyleigh Record also reset a program standard in the prelims of the 800 meters, finishing as the top qualifier among 27 runners with a time of 2:15.35. First-year
Kate Monaco also ran the 800, finishing 17th in 2:24.64.
Junior
Ashley Sheldon started the day by qualifying for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles with a fifth-place finish, crossing the line in 14.88 seconds to place second in her heat and post the second-fastest time in school history behind only her own program standard. First-year
Benny Pierre Louis also competed in the event and took almost three-quarters of a second off her season-best time, finishing in 17.47 seconds to place 17th overall.

Eilis McKenna came two spots away from a podium finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing in 11:51.02 to crack the top 10. Joining in the event, sophomore
Charlotte Knight finished in 12:59.68 and junior
Ella McCarthy crossed the line in a career-best 13:15.98.
First-year
Kate Nielsen represented Union in the 400-meter dash, placing 18th in 1:04.86.
In the throwing events, juniors
Epephanie LaBoy and
Maggie Buckley both set new career bests in the hammer throw with marks of 32.18 meters and 18.03 meters, respectively. Buckley also set a new season best in the javelin throw with a top mark of 23.54 meters.
The Garnet Chargers will be back to the track tomorrow for day two of the conference championships beginning at 10:30 a.m.
