ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Junior
Ashley Sheldon earned a conference title in the high jump to finish off her busy and productive afternoon as the Union College women's indoor track & field team finished seventh at the Liberty League Indoor Track & Field Championships, held at Rochester Institute of Technology's Gordon Field House on Friday and Saturday.
Sheldon grabbed 15 of Union's 18 points on the weekend, which placed the Garnet Chargers 17 points back of St. Lawrence University in sixth place and well ahead of Bard College in eighth. Ithaca College took the conference title with 212 points.
Sheldon earned all her points for Union in two events over a matter of minutes on Saturday, switching between the high jump and the 60-meter hurdles. After clearing her first three heights (1.53m, 1.58m and 1.63m) on the first try, Sheldon – in the middle of the high jump competition – took some time off to break the school record in the 60-meter hurdles for the second straight day, flying down the track in 9.04 seconds to surpass her prelim time of 9.11 seconds and earn a fourth-place finish. Immediately after the event, she quickly switched shoes and went back to the high jump, where she leaped over the 1.68m bar on her second attempt to clinch the conference title and earn 10 more points for her squad.
The Garnet Chargers also earned a point in the 4x400-meter relay, with the quartet of junior
Kat Doran, junior
Devon Hardy, sophomore
Charlotte Knight and first-year
Kate Monaco finishing in 4:34.95 to place eighth.
Doran also earned a top-15 finish in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 26.80 seconds. Sophomore
Kyleigh Record represented Union in the 800 meters and placed 18th, finishing in 2:27.73, and first-year
Eilis McKenna was the team's sole entry in the 3,000 meters and finished in 11:08.93.
In the throwing events, junior
Epephanie LaBoy took part in the weight throw and just missed a top-20 finish with a top toss of 11.05 meters. First-year
Leah Scopteuolo-Rosen also joined Sheldon in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.43 meters on her first attempt.
Qualified student-athletes will continue the indoor season next Friday and Saturday at the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference Championships at the Armory in New York City.
