Women's Golf Finishes Spring Break Invite in Second Place

SORRENTO, Fla. – The Union College women's golf team carded a round of 338 to move into a tie for second place after the second and final day of the Union Florida Spring Invitational, held at Redtail Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday.

The Garnet Chargers had the third-best round of the event on Tuesday to finish the two days at 691, matching Snead State Community College for second place. Florida Gateway College followed up yesterday's 337 with a 322 on Tuesday to finish at 659.

Florida Gateway's Karnee Gainey, the top-ranked golfer in NJCAA Division II this year, earned individual medalist honors by carding rounds of 76 and 74 to earn a 10-shot victory. Union sophomore Iyene Essien finished in second place at 160, following yesterday's 82 with a 78 today.

Essien started her day strong with a one-over 37 on the front nine, helped by birdies on the par-five 2nd and 7th holes. She finished the four longest holes on the course at one-over on the day and three-over for the two days, the second-best score in the field. The sophomore came in with four pars and five bogies on the back nine to move two spots up the leaderboard.

Sophomore Carinna Anastasio and senior Shea White both improved on their scores from yesterday as well. Anastasio shot an 82 on Tuesday to finish in seventh place at 168, posting a 40 on the front nine and holding steady on the back side before giving away three strokes on the final two holes. White shot a two-over 38 on the back nine to close with a flourish on Tuesday, capping her round of 85 with a birdie on the par-four 18th to end the event at 171.

Sophomore Ella Golas shaved six strokes off yesterday's round with a 93 on Tuesday, finishing the two days at 192, while first-year Emma Doherty carded a second straight round of 105. Playing as individuals, first-year Claire Giletta and senior Delaney Fox both improved on Tuesday, with Giletta carding a 100 and Fox shooting a 107 on day two.

Union will enjoy the rest of Spring Break before returning to competition back up north at SUNY Cortland's Martin/Wallace Invitational on April 11 and 12.
