Vassar Wins Liberty League Women's Tennis Crown;
Skidmore Third, St. Lawrence Fifth, Rensselaer Seventh
Rochester, New York (October 10, 2004) - Top-seeded Vassar College rolled to
a 5-2 victory over third-seeded Hamilton College today to win the Women's
Tennis Championship of the Liberty League. All matches were hosted at the
University of Rochester.
The Brewers won two of three doubles events and three of four
singles matches to secure five points. Hamilton won at #2 doubles and #1
singles. The #5 and #6 singles matches were halted in the second set when
the team score was determined.
In the other matches, second-seeded Skidmore defeated fourth-seeded
William Smith, 5-2, to take third place. St. Lawrence, the fifth seed,
defeated host Rochester, 5-0, for fifth place. The Yellowjackets entered the
field as the seventh seed. Rensselaer earned a 5-1 win over Union College
for seventh place.
For Vassar, Kelly Graham, Anna Will, and Elysa Kliman won in singles
positions two through four respectively. Hamilton's Sarah Coleman claimed
the only singles point for the Continentials. She defeated Vassar's Debbie
Sharnak, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles play, Sharnak and Graham paired to defeat Coleman and
Katie Donovan at #1 doubles, 9-7. Robin Chu and Amber Gaskins defeated Kate
Borne and Lindsay Walsh, 8-6 at #3 doubles. Hamilton's doubles win came at
#2 with Kara and Marni Powers defeating Will and Courtney Burks, 8-3.
