GENEVA, N.Y. – Sophomores
Jenny Park and
Caroline Fitzsimmons both earned consolation bracket titles to lead the Union College women's tennis team on the second and final day of the Mary Hosking Invitational, hosted by William Smith College on Sunday at the HWS Tennis Center.
Union went 6-3 over the three consolation brackets on Sunday, with two of those losses coming to fellow Garnet Chargers. The squad went 4-0 in semifinal matchups, setting up a pair of all-Union consolation finals.
In the "B" bracket, Park and first-year
Maddy Alecia met in the consolation final after a pair of semifinal victories. Alecia shut out RIT's Amulya Settyvari, 8-0, and Park got past William Smith's Bethany Walker, 8-4, to set up the all-Union final, which Park won by an 8-5 score.
It was the same story in the "C" bracket, with Fitzsimmons and first-year
Megan Woods meeting in the final match. Woods knocked off RIT's Sona Hanumali by an 8-2 score and Fitzsimmons posted an 8-6 win over William Smith's Kaitlyn Hardy in the semifinals, and Fitzsimmons registered another 8-6 victory over Woods in the final.
In the "A" singles section, first-year
Loden Bradstreet dropped her consolation first-round matchup to William Smith's Lillian Stukovsky by an 8-2 score.
Union had three doubles compete in consolation matches on Sunday as well. In the "A" flight, Fitzsimmons and junior
Scarlet Carrara fell 8-2 to Emily Greb and Tina Dong of Rochester Institute of Technology while Park and first-year
Ava Boncordo dropped an 8-4 match against St. Lawrence University's Sarah Oldland and Ellie Fritz. At the "B" flight, Woods and classmate
Violet Tran came up short to Lucy Hudson and Anna Nigro of William Smith by an 8-3 score.
Union will start off dual-match play on Saturday, traveling to Hamilton College for a non-conference matchup.
