GENEVA, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team took part in day one of the Mary Hosking Invitational on Saturday, hosted by William Smith College at the HWS Tennis Center.
 
In the "A" Singles bracket, first-year Ava Boncordo split her two matches, winning an 8-3 set against Ithaca College's Alys Pop to start the day before dropping an 8-3 match to top-seeded Elisa Iuri of St. Lawrence University. Also in the "A" bracket, classmate Loden Bradstreet fell to Rochester Institute of Technology's Emily Greb by an 8-5 score.
 
In the "B" bracket, all three Union entries fell in the first round. First-year Maddy Alecia dropped an 8-4 match to Zuri Freeman of Ithaca, junior Scarlet Carrara fell 8-1 to William Smith College's Nellie Larson, and sophomore Jenny Park could not get by University of Rochester's Lauren Kallas, 8-4.
 
First-year Violet Tran earned one victory in the "C" bracket, defeating Ithaca's Lillian Caccamo by a 9-7 margin in the first round before falling to SLU's Sarah Oldland, 8-0, in the quarterfinals. First-year Megan Woods and sophomore Caroline Fitzsimmons both lost in the first round, falling 8-2 to Rochester's Lily Caldwell and 8-4 to Rochester's Aiza Ahmed, respectively.
 
Bradstreet and Alecia earned one win in the "A" doubles bracket, pulling out an 8-6 victory over Caldwell and Ahmed of Rochester before falling 8-1 to Yvette Karera and Ariana Karena of SLU in the quarterfinals. In other first-round action, Park and Boncordo came one break short in an 8-6 loss to WSC's Grace Magna and Lillian Stukovsky, and Carrara and Fitzsimmons came up on the wrong side of an 8-4 match to SLU's Iuri and Addison Jones.
 
Tran and Woods were Union's only representatives in the "B" doubles bracket, falling by an 8-2 score to Teghan Torrey and Elizabeth Gardner of WSC in the first round.
 
The Garnet Chargers will be back on the court tomorrow for the second and final day of the Mary Hosking Inviational.
