Union Drops Second Straight at Colorado College

Box Score

Colorado Springs, CO (Oct. 16, 2004) Union came out more poised in its second game against Colorado College but costly turnovers would provide the Tigers with a 4-2 win in the end.  The Dutchmen were able to take a one-goal lead heading into the first intermission with two quick strikes but a short-handed goal by the home team in the third period proved to be the game-winner.

Late in the first period Union committed turnovers in the defensive zone which eventually led to the Tigers scoring the opening goal.  Following a face off in the Union zone Marty Sertich took a pass from Brett Sterling and beat Dutchmen goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) low for the score.  Mayotte came up big for Union less than a minute later when he stopped three successive shots by Colorado College on the power play.  He followed up at 17:25 with a save after Union turned the puck over in their zone once again.

Union went on the offensive in the waning minutes of the first period, forcing a turnover in the Tigers zone.  Freshman Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) capitalized on the takeaway with a wraparound goal to tie the game at one.  The Union offense was ignited and scored the go-ahead goal 15 seconds later.  Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) took a pass from Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MA) and went top shelf from between the face off circles on Tigers goaltender Matt Zaba to shock the World Arena crowd and give Union motivation heading into the locker room.

Colorado College took its late period let down to heart and stepped up its offense in the second period.  The Tigers had two great chances on the power play in the opening minutes from the left side.  The second shot almost made it past Mayotte but he reached behind him in time to cover up the puck.

Colorado College was finally able to break through with the game-tying goal at 13:10.  Brett Sterling took a shot from the right side off a return feed from center by Marty Sertich right in front of the net.  The tying goal appeared to wake up the Dutchmen as they started to apply pressure on the Colorado College defense.  Bouchard fired a shot on the power play late in the period but Zaba was able to control the puck.  On the other end Mayotte made a diving save at 18:20 to keep the score knotted at two.  After shifting to his right to face the puck he dove back to rob Sertich on the weak side.

It would be Mayotte again, saving two point-blank shots six minutes into the third period.  Remnants of the first period came back to haunt Union though as another turnover led to a short-handed score for the Tigers.  Sertich made good on his scoring chance this time around, stealing the puck near the Dutchmen blue line.  He raced in on goal, froze Mayotte with a fake to the right before coming back to his left to sneak in a low shot.  The Tigers would add an empty net goal for the final count.

Mayotte finished with 33 saves as he suffered his second loss of the season, while Zaba made 21 in the win.  The Tigers held the advantage in the shot category, 37-23.

Union falls to 0-2 overall while Colorado College improved to 2-0.  The Dutchmen will host Bowling Green in a pair of games for its home-opener next weekend starting on Friday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m.
