Junior pitcher Frank Arcuri tossed his first collegiate complete-game shutout to give Union a 1-0 victory over Oneonta in the first game of their non-league doubleheader at Schenectady's Central Park. The Dragons picked up a split by winning the nitecap, 6-1.
Freshman Brian Rhone provided Arcuri with the only run he needed when he delivered a two-out pinch-hit single in the last of the seventh. Senior first baseman Jim Griglun started the winning rally when he stroked a one-out single. He advanced on Kyle Murphy's hit and scored on Rhone's hit.
Arcuri scattered seven hits, walked three and fanned four. He pitched his way out of trouble in each of the first three innings after the Dragons had put a pair of runners on base in each frame.
The junior righthander saved his best effort for the seventh when Oneonta's Tom Colt led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Rocco Grassi, who reached safely on an error. Arcrui got the next to hitters on infield ground outs before walking the bases full. He escaped unscathed by getting the final out on a ground ball to strand his eighth, ninth and tenth runners of the game.
Oneonta scored a pair of runs in each the second, third and sixth innings to get the split. Ben McGuire plated Union's only run in the sixth.
