Dutchmen's rally in the ninth falls short, 6-5

Box Score

SCHENECTADY, N.YFreshman shortstop Jim Nolan helped pitcher Paul Kibbe to escape a two-on, one-out situation in the last of the ninth inning by grabbing and infield pop up and a sharp line drive as Hamilton defeated Union, 6-5, in a non-league baseball game at Central Park.

The win gave the 11-22 Continentals a two-game sweep over the Dutchmen, who fell to 14-18 with the loss. Kibbe, a junior and a native of Albany, New York, and graduate of Albany Academy, set a Hamilton record for wins in a season and is now 6-2.

Trailing 6-3 going into the ninth, Union got inning-opening singles from Kyle Murphy and Dan Mehleisen. Both Dutchmen crossed the plate on senior first baseman Jim Griglun's double before Kibbe struck out Union's next batter for the first out of the inning. Andrew Street's single moved Griglun to third before Nolan's defensive efforts preserved the win for Hamilton.

The Dutchmen, who are seeded fourth in this weekend's Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association championship tournament at Clarkson, took a 1-0 lead in the last of the third thanks to a couple of Hamilton errors. The Continentals tied the game in the top of the fourth on Pat McGarry's double and an eventual sacrifice fly by Pat Suarez.

Union, which dropped a 4-0 decision to Hamilton earlier this season, scored twice in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. A single by Murphy, an rbi double by Griglun and a run-scoring hit by Jeff Viamari produced the runs.

Hamilton regained the lead, 4-3, in the seventh on a two-run double by Justin Parker, who scored on Tom Tidgwell's double. An rbi single by Nolan made it 5-3 in the top of the eighth, and Pat McGarry's single with one out in the ninth plated John Porges, who had led off with a walk, with what turned out to be the game-winner.
