Canton, NY- The St. Lawrence Women's Tennis team (1-0) opened the 2005-2006 season with a dominating 8-1 win over the Union Dutchwomen (1-1) at the Sammis Tennis Courts in Canton, N.Y. Sunday afternoon. This marks the first time since the 2000-20001 season, that the Saints have opened with a win.
The match opened with wins for the Saints at No.2 and No.3 doubles and Union taking a win at No.1. Jennie Werts (New York, NY/Fieldston School) and Jess Meola (Hartsdale, NY/Ardsley) took an 8-2 win for Union at No.1 over junior Anne Moulin and sophomore Kirsten Lannon. At No.2 senior co-captain Courtney Ellis and freshman Liz Karam defeated Jenny Dalenta (Tolland, CT/Tolland) and Sarah Stiles (Rochester, NY/Sutherland) 8-1. Senior co-captain Meg Terrien and sophomore Candice Vallejos won 8-3 at No.3 over Liz Weiner (W. Hartford, CT/Hall) and Kelly Fitzpatrick (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) to give the Saints a 2-1 edge heading into singles action.
Karam started her career off well with the Saints, beating Stiles 6-1, 6-0 at the No.4 singles spot. Ellis followed with a 6-0, 6-0 shut-out win over Dalenta at No.3 to push the Saints lead to 4-1. Lannon closed out the win at No.2 singles, 6-1, 6-4 over Meola. Vallejos then downed Libby Johnson 6-0, 6-3 at the No.6 spot. Terrien pulled out a win over Val Gomes (Willbraham, MA/E. Longmeadow) at No.5 6-0, 7-5 to make it 7-1 Saints. Moulin closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Werts at the No.1 spot.
Union continues play on the road against Vassar on September 10th at 1:00 p.m.
