SOUTH HADLEY, MA -- Union's women's tennis team won three singles matches but the Dutchwomen were swept in doubles and lost the spring season opener, 6-3 at Mount Holyoke Saturday. But Union later pulled out a big 5-4 victory at Smith College, ranked #16 in the region.
In the opener, Union won at #2 singles, as Hallie Mabrey (Needham, MA/Dana Hall) was a 6-3, 3-6 (11-9) victor in the tie breaker over Ashley Fallon. Kathleen Rucci (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) was a 6-2, 6-2 straight sets winner over Anna Boatwright, and Jessica Meola (Hartsdale, NY/Ardsley) won 6-3, 7-5 over Elizabeth Tighe.
Aleks Mihailovic downed Jennie Werts (New York, NY/Fieldston School) 6-3, 6-0 at #1, and Helena Jedziniak defeated Brittany Miller (Scituate, MA/Scituate), 6-3, 6-1 at #3 singles. Sarah London of Mount Holyoke won 6-3, 6-3 over Union's Abby Cable (Weston, MA/Buckingham Brown). The Lyons swept the doubles with Mihailovic and Fallon winning 8-4 over Werts and Meola in #1. Boatwright and Sue Bhalodia downed Miller and Mabrey, 8-4 and Sue Hartmann and London teamed up for an 8-3 victory over Elizabeth Weiner (W. Hartford, CT/Hall) and Lyndsay Wehrum (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls).
The Dutchwomen later competed at Smith and pulled out a 5-4 victory when Meola won at #6 singles. She defeated Tina Jackson 6-7 (tiebreaker score 8-6), 6-4, 7-6 (tiebreaker score 10-7) to win the match for Union. Other winners included Mabrey at #2 over Kate Johnson, 6-3, 6-3, and Rucci over Alanna Dick at #4, 4-6, 6-2 and 7-6 (tiebreaker 10-3). Union's other singles win was by Cable, 6-2, 5-2 (retired) over Vida Chen. In the doubles, Mabrey and Miller won 9-7 over Miyu Kikuchi and Sue Fuji.
Union competes April 21 at SUNY New Paltz at 1 p.m.
