UTICA, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team collected 21 hits in a 24-20 win over SUNYIT Wednesday afternoon. Colin McKelligan (Canton, Mass.) went 5-for-7 with four RBI and five runs scored to pace the Dutchmen, while Scott Carroll (Scituate, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a double, four RBI and three runs scored. Dane Flavin (Schenectady, N.Y.) had five RBI on two hits.

The 24 runs mark the most by a Union team since a 25-7 win over Oberlin in Florida on March 26, 2001.

Union (4-18) plated six runners in each of the first two innings. Andy Brown (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) led off the game with a double, the first of six Dutchmen hits in the first inning, and singled when he came up again later in the frame.
 

After giving up three unearned runs in the bottom of the stanza, Union collected six runs in the second when the Dutchmen batted around for the second consecutive inning. Pat Wilson (Cos Cob, Conn.) and Shawn Johnston (Hamilton, N.J.) scored after reaching via walks. Flavin, who reached on an error, Brian Goldman (Pittsford, N.Y.), who walked, and Ryan Bowes (Hamilton, N.J.) who singled, all came around to score on a double by Carroll before Zach Tillo (Lancaster, Mass.) hit an RBI single to send Carroll across.

The Wildcats (13-20) got three more back in the bottom of the second, with two coming on sac flies from Ty Brodt and Ben Bushey, and the other on an error, one of five on the Dutchmen in the game.

After spotting Union another run in the top of the third, SUNYIT clawed back with three more runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the Dutchmen's lead to 13-9, before adding three more in the bottom of the fourth on four straight hits.

Union edged ahead, 16-12, with three runs in the fifth inning, after McKelligan led off with a single. Brown collected the only other hit of the frame, an RBI single that plated Goldman, who reached on a walk.

Matt Rogers (Topsfield, Mass.) retired the batters in order in the Wildcats' fifth, setting up the Dutchmen for a four-run sixth. Tillo got things rolling with a triple before Wilson walked. McKelligan knocked Tillo home with a single, and Flavin sent two across the plate with a double. Flavin later scored from second on a throwing error after a single by Jeff Lounsbury (Stamford, Conn.).

Down 20-12, SUNYIT responded with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth on six hits, including a two-run double by Justin Marsden, and a pair of walks.

McKelligan hit a two-run single in the seventh and later crossed on a Johnston single to give Union a 23-19 lead headed into the eighth inning. Each team added a run in the last two frames.

David Arouca (Wilmette, Ill.) started on the mound for Union, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out one in 1.1 innings. Rogers, who earned his second win of the season, gave up eight runs (five earned) on eight hits in 2.2 innings of relief. Brian McLaughlin (Norwood, N.J.) followed with two innings of relief work during which he allowed seven runs (six earned) on six hits. Matt Sheehan (Lexington, Mass.) allowed one run on a pair of hits in the final three innings for the Dutchmen, earning his first save of the season.

Union travels to SUNY New Paltz for a noon non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 26.
