TROY, NY – Led by victories in four singles matches and wins in two of three doubles, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team defeated Union College, 6-3 at Sharp Courts. With the victory, the Engineers secure the fifth seed in this weekend's Liberty League Championships and improve to 5-3 overall. The Dutchwomen fall to 2-9 and will be the sixth seed in the tournament.
Among the top performances Thursday was RPI sophomore Christine Roe (Phoenix, AZ/North), who won at second singles and along with partner Michelle Pelersi (Voorheesville, NY/Clayton A. Bouton) captured second doubles.
Union got singles wins by
Hallie Mabrey (Needham, MA) at #1, with a 7-5 win in the opening set then receiving the victory by default.
Libby Johnson (Boxborough, MA) was a victor for the Dutchwomen at #5 singles, 6-4, 1-6 and 7-6 (5).
Johnson joined
Kathleen Rucci (Schenectady, NY) for an 8-4 win at #3 doubles.

Both squads return to action on Saturday and Sunday at the Liberty League Championships, hosted by Hobart & William Smith Colleges in Geneva. Action begins at 9am each day.
