ALBANY, NY -- Senior defenseman
Lane Caffaro and sophomore forward
Adam Presizniuk were honored by ECAC Hockey for their performances during the 2008-09 men's ice hockey campaign. Caffaro was named First Team All-ECAC Hockey, while Presizniuk was selected Third Team All-ECAC Hockey, the league announced on Tuesday. Caffaro becomes only the second Dutchmen all-time to be selected to the first team and the first since goaltender Trevor Koenig accomplished the feat during the 1996-97 season.
A native of Slave Lake, Alberta Caffaro led the conference defenseman during the regular season with 22 points, including 14 assists and a career-high eight goals. In conference only games, he led the defenseman with 18 points with seven goals and 11 assists. Earlier this year, Caffaro became Union's all-time leading defensive scorer, passing Reid Simonton (1992-96), who had 68 points. The senior co-captain ended his career ninth all-time on Union's scoring list with 79 points, including 23 goals and 56 assists, which is fifth all-time. Caffaro also ranks ninth on the school's all-time list with 13 power-play goals, including a career-high tying five man-advantage tallies this season. Caffaro, who was a third team selection in 2007-08, became the first Dutchmen to be named to the Coaches' and Media Preseason All-ECAC Hockey Team.
Presizniuk is honored by the league for the second consecutive year. In 2007-08 he was named to the all-rookie team after leading the Dutchmen with 25 points, including seven goals and 18 assists. He followed that performance with a school-record 38 points during the 2008-09 season. He potted a career-high 16 goals (tied for seventh all-time) and 21 assists (fifth all-time). His career-best six power-play goals led the team this season, along with his eight multi-point games. Between Jan. 3 and Jan. 24, the Calgary, Alberta native went on a career-long seven-game scoring streak, posting 11 points. Presizniuk is only the third student-athlete in Union's Division I history to finish the season leading the team in points, goals and assists (Craig Ferrero, 1991-92, and Kris Goodjohn, 2001-02). The sophomores success led to team success. When he had a point, the Dutchmen were 17-6-1. When he scored a goal they were 11-5-0 and 12-3-1 when he had an assist. In his eight multi-point efforts, Union went 7-1-0.
The Dutchmen just finished their season where they won a school record 19 games and earned the program's first postseason series victory with a two-game sweep of Clarkson (5-3 and 7-2). Union finished eighth in the conference and held home ice advantage for the sixth time in seven seasons.
