Drillinger breaks 1 Meter Dive record at Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- 
In their opening meet of the 2011 season the Williams Men's Swimming and Diving team defeated the visiting Union College Dutchmen 227-73.

In the diving events Williams was challenged by Union's Ian Drillinger, who placed first in the 1 m competition with a score of 301.72, ahead of Williams' Rohan Bhatt and Alex Long. Drillinger broke a 15 year old Union record previously held by Brian Field, who scored 298.73.

Nicholas Boncek took first place for Union in the 100 yard fly with a time of 54.31, before placing third in the 400 yard IM with a 4:28.05.

Williams' Paul Dyrkacz was followed in the 200 yd freestyle by teammate Chris Weihs, a first year, and Zach Wahl (1:49.63) from Union. In the 200 yd breaststroke Dyrkacz was backed up by Williams senior Greg MacElroy, while Alex Boyd of Union took third with 2:19.36. Boyd also claimed third in the 100 yard breast.

Wahl would also come in second in the 200 fly with 1:57.80. In the 100 yd backstroke Williams junior Philip Treesh placed first (54.61) while Union's Michael Mooney came in second. Matt Wahl of Union broke up the Williams sweep by placing third in the 100 free at a time of 50.09.
 
Williams' teams featured competitors that won seven of the 30 individual races at last year's NCAA Championships. Two competitors from the weekend hold national records.

Union will next travel to the Liberty League Championship tournament at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on December 2nd and 3rd.
