Union splits home-opening doubleheader with St. Lawrence

Sophomore Dylan Katz-Wicks went a combined 3-for-6 in a doubleheader against St. Lawrence.

SCHENECTADY, NY
– Union College baseball earned a split in a home opening doubleheader against St. Lawrence, winning Game 1, 4-2, before falling 17-2 in Game 2 at Central Park. The Dutchmen improved to 4-4 (1-1 Liberty League, while St. Lawrence moved to 5-10 (2-4 Liberty League). The two teams will meet in another doubleheader tomorrow, with Game 1 beginning at 12:00 p.m.

GAME 1: UNION 4, ST. LAWRENCE 2

Union won its home opener 4-2 against St. Lawrence with some aggressive base-running and solid pitching from freshman Dane O'Neil. The Dutchmen stole 10 bases, and O'Neil went the distance in the seven inning contest, allowing eight hits and striking out five to pick up his first career win, as the Dutchmen scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to come from behind for the victory.

Trailing 2-1 entering the home half of the fifth inning, sophomore Dylan Katz-Wicks got the rally started with a single to right field, then stole second base. Sophomore Tyler Heck drove in Katz-Wicks with a double, and senior Dane Flavin followed with a single to give Union a 3-2 lead. With one out, Anthony Cassesse's infield single moved Flavin to third. Sophomore Matt Barretto was intentionally walked aftger Cassesse stole second base, and freshman David Peretti drove in another run on a fielder's choice, giving Union a 4-2 lead.

The Saints took a 1-0 lead with a two-out rally in the top of the third inning, as Paul Piatelli drove in Bryan Palermo, who had reached on a single earlier in the inning.  

Union scored an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning, after junior Nicholas Ranalli walked and stole second. Freshman Joe Bradlee reached on a throwing error by St. Lawrence pitcher Chris Cook, allowing Ranalli to score.

St. Lawrence took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning on Matt D'Auteiul's RBI single to right field, scoring Matt DeLuca, who led off the inning with a single.

Cook took the loss for the Saints, surrendering four runs (three earned) in 4 1/3 innings pitched, while striking out two and walking three.

GAME 2: ST. LAWRENCE 17, UNION 2

The Saints scored five runs in the first and third innings to take a commanding lead en route to a 17-2 win over the Dutchmen. St. Lawrence scored five runs on four hits and one error in the first inning off of Union starter Phil Kemp. Brian Magoveny's double to left field drove in the first two runs of the game and Matt DeLuca followed with another double to left-center to drive in another run. Two more runs scored on a Union throwing error, giving the Saints a 5-0 lead.

St. Lawrence tacked on five more runs in the top of the third inning, as Bryan Palermo singled with the bases loaded to drive in a run followed by Paul Piatelli's bases loaded walk to make it 7-0.  Khifer O'Connor's sacrifice fly drove in another run, and Matt D'Auteiul followed with a two-run double to give St. Lawrence a 10-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, Taylor Engle's double drove in Palermo who doubled earlier in the inning, and O'Connor, who walked. St. Lawrence added three more runs in the top of the sixth on RBI singles from Carter Franz and Tom Pasquali, and a sacrifice fly from Joe Riley.

Zane Fish homered in the top of the eighth inning to drive in two more runs, giving the Saints a 17-0 lead.

Union added runs in the eighth and ninth innings on an RBI single from freshman Fernando Gomez, and an RBI groundout from freshman Joshua Rothberg.

Jason Conde earned the win for St. Lawrence, allowing two hits in six innings of work, while striking out eight batters and walking one.
