SCHENECTADY, NY- In the opening game of a doubleheader against St. Lawrence on Sunday, Union freshman pitcher
Andrew Beaule allowed one run on one hit, striking out four and walking two in seven innings of work to lead the Dutchmen to a 6-1 win over the Saints at Central Park.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the top of the fifth inning, the Dutchmen scored three times to take the lead for good. Freshman
Joe Bradlee led off with a single, followed by a walk from sophomore
Dylan Katz-Wicks. After sophomore
Tyler Heck sacrificed the runners into scoring position, senior
Dane Flavin was walked to load the bases. A passed ball, followed by a wild pitch from St. Lawrence pitcher Pat Considene allowed Union to take the lead. Pinch hitter
Fernando Gomez hit a sacrifice fly to give Union a 3-1 lead.
The Dutchmen tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh inning, allowing Beaule some breathing room to finish the complete game. Bradlee walked and stole second to lead off the inning. With one out, Heck singled to right field to drive in Bradlee. After Flavin walked, Gomez hit a double to deep left-center field to score two more runs and give Union a commanding 6-1 lead heading into the bottom half of the seventh inning.
Beaule recorded 16 outs in a row from the second inning on, including the final three of the game to help the freshman earn his first career win.
Seth Roberts took the loss for Union in the second game. He pitched one inning and gave up five hits, five runs, and walked three. He was relieved by Brendan Mclaughlin who went 3 2/3 innings and gave up eight hits, six runs, two walks, and struck out three.
Quinn Rhoda came in the fifth inning and went 2 1/3 and only gave up one run on one hit, walked two, and struck out one.
Drew Amboian pitched the last 2/3 inning and recorded one walk and two strikeouts. At the plate,
Dane Flavin was 3-for-6 with a double, one run scored, and two RBIs. Matthew Barretto was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Joshua Rothberg went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. He also stole a base. The 1-2-3 hitters;
Joe Bradlee,
Dylan Katz-Wicks, and
Tyler Heck all had two hits each.
The Saints jumped out to the quick 5-0 after the first inning. Union would answer back in the top of the second with a four run inning to make it 5-4. Flavin led off with a double and then scored on
Fernando Gomez's single. Anthony Cassesse then reached on an error and Baretto singled to load the bases. Gomez would score on a balk to make it 5-2.
David Peretti's fielder's choice scored Cassese followed by Vi ncent Esposito's fielder's choice which scored Barretto.
The game would stay that way until the bottom of the fourth when St. Lawrence scored five times to go up 10-4. A Barretto single would bring in a run in the fifth which St. Lawrence would get back. Flavin's single in the sixth would scored a run which made it 11-6. Another Dutchmen run would score in the seventh inning to make it a 11-7 game. The Saints would get one run in the eighth inning to make the score 12-7.
Union looked to rally in the ninth. Barretto got the rally started with a leadoff single and then stole second. Peretti fouled out and then pinch-hitter Nathan Foster flied to right. Down to their last out, Bradlee walked. Katz-Wicks then singled to load the bases. Heck then singled to score Barretto and make it 12-8. Flavin then singled to score Bradlee and the game was now 12-9. Gomez then walked to bring in Katz-Wicks. With the bases still loaded, Rothberg would ground out to second to end the rally.
Union is now 5-5 on the season and 2-2 in the Liberty League. Their next game is this Thursday on the road in Bennington, VT against Southern Vermont at 4 pm.
