Z. Wahl sets new 100-yard butterfly record, Dutchmen remain in fourth at UNYSCSA Championships

Junior Zack Wahl sets a new 100-yard buterfly record with a mark of 50.12, breaks the previous record by 0.20 seconds.

Another Dutchmen swimming & diving record falls as junior Zack Wahl breaks 100-yard butterfly record, aiding the Dutchmen to a total of 504 points through two days at the UNYSCSA Championships at the at the Ithaca College Athletics & Events Center Aquatic Pavilion Wednesday afternoon.

Wahl breaks a record with a time of 50.12 set by Kevin Makarowski, Union's first male national champion in the sport of swimming, winning the 200 individual medley at the NCAA Championships in 1995. He helped lead the Union men's swimming & diving teams to state championships in the final three of his four seasons. He earned a remarkable 23 NCAA All-American honors plus three honorable mention All-American awards. The winner of Union's Pike and Jaffe Awards, Makarowski was a three-time state or league swimmer of the Year. He broke 11 of Union's 19 swimming records during his career and now owns eight of the records. The previous mark was 50.32 which was set back in 1997.

Phillips also came in with an impressive finish in the 100-yard butterfly as he placed fourth, being timed at 50.95. The 200-yard freestyle relay squad of Billy Phillips, Benjamin Nadareski, Matt Wahl and Zack Wahl were able to come away with a fourth place finish, clocking in at 1:24.38.

David Sorensen was featured in the 400-yard IM as he was able to earn a eighth place finish coming in with a time of 4:16.71. The quartet of Andrew Welch, Zack Wahl, Sorensen and Phillips added onto the Dutchmen tally with a 3:26.90 time, good for fourth place.

On the boards in the one-meter event, Jeremy Sagaille earned a qualifying score of 459.75, placing him sixth.

Union added 341 points to their point total and maintained their rank in fourth place through two days at the meet.

The Union Dutchwomen will be slated to compete in the 200-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke and the 800-yard freestyle relay tomorrow starting at 10 a.m. with the preliminary rounds and 6 p.m. for the final rounds.
