Fishman and Caruso honored by ECAC

Union College baseball freshman Jake Fishman and Senior Sam Caruso earned ECAC Upstate Region Yearly honors for their performances during the 2014 season, announced Wednesday afternoon. 

Fishman was named the ECAC Upstate Region Rookie of the Year. The freshman  was a dual threat for the Dutchmen during his freshman season, dominating both at the plate and on the mound. Offensively, he batted .400 with 24 RBI and 42 hits. Fishman reached base at .457 clip and was 12-for-14 in stolen base attempts. On the mound, he went 7-0 with a 2.29 ERA in 63 innings pitched. In 10 appearances, he started nine games, completed four and notched one shutout. He allowed just six extra-base hits and opponents hit .224 against him. Defensively, Fishman compiled a .986 fielding percentage, committing three errors in 214 total chances. He was also named the ABCA/Rawlings All-New York Region Rookie of the Year and a First-Team selection, the D3baseball.com All-New York Region Rookie of the Year and First-Team honoree and the Liberty League Rookie of the Year and All-Liberty League First-Team.

Caruso was named to the Upstate Region First Team after outstanding senior season. Caruso led the Liberty League in batting average (.400) and hits (50) while being a rock in the outfield. He recorded 79 putouts and recorded only one error to maintain a fielding percentage of .988. He was also named to the Liberty League and D3Baseball.com First All-Star teams and the ABCA All-New York Region Second Team.

The Dutchmen ended their most successful season in program history with a Liberty League Championship and their first NCAA post-season birth since 1965.
