LATHAM, NY – The Union College women's tennis team opened its 2014-15 campaign with a 9-0 dual loss to St. Lawrence on Saturday. Due to rain and temperatures in the 40s, the Liberty League match was moved indoors to Tri-City Fitness.
The Saints (1-0, 1-0 LL) returned their entire roster off a squad that advanced to the Liberty League Tournament Semfinals last year, and their experience showed against the Dutchwomen. SLU won all the singles flights in straight sets, although Union's
Mina Hsia did take six games from Olivia Arroyo at No 2 singles. The "U' lineup featured five sophomores and the collegiate debuts of
Lisa Wood at No. 6 singles and freshman
Danielle Miller at No. 3 doubles. Union was also without the services
Hayley Lough, a staple at No. 5 singles who is studying abroad this semester.
The season opener also featured the debut of interim head coach
Don Dudley, who previously spent seven seasons as an assistant coach for the Dutchwomen.
Union (0-1, 0-1 LL) has a quick turnaround time for its next match, hosting SUNY Plattsburgh tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Union outdoor courts.
