SCHENECTADY, NY - Middlebury won the final event of the meet, the 200-yard freestyle relay, by just under two seconds to erase a 115-109 Union lead to come away with the 122-119 victory over the Dutchmen on Saturday afternoon.
The Middlebury relay team edged out Union's team of
Dan Steinmetz,
James Lew,
Toby Casper and
Matthew Hellauer 1:29.37 to 1:31.21 to overcome the four point deficit and win the meet.
Union, however, did win eight individual events on the afternoon.
On the diving side, the Dutchmen swept the top three spots in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events.
Matthew Mintz won the 3-meter with a score of 270.60.
Cameron Robertson and
Sam Hoyt finished in second and third, respectively. In the 1-meter, Hoyt took first with a score of 300.22 followed by Robertson and
Jeremy Sagaille.
In the swimming events,
Benjamin Nadareski and
John Enquist both claimed a pair of wins for Union. Nadareski won the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle while Enquist took first in the 200-yard IM and the 200-yard breastroke.
Both swimmers were also a part of the 200-yard medley relay team that won with a time of 1:37.72. Rounding out the team was
Andrew Welch and
Brendan McClure.
Welch claimed a first place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time 1:57.01 and was second in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 1:48.90. McClure placed second in the 200-yard butterfly.
Union will back in the pool next Saturday as they travel to Hamilton College for a dual meet.
