Dutchmen prepare to host Colgate and #7/8 Cornell

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.--The Union College men's ice hockey team returns to Messa Rink for the first time since Dec. 20 this weekend, facing Colgate Friday, Jan. 15 before welcoming #7/8 Cornell Saturday, Jan. 16.

LAST TIME OUT //
Union had its seven-game unbeaten streak and its five-game win streak snapped with a 5-0 loss at #1/2 Quinnipiac on Thursday. The five-goal margin was Union's largest in a loss since a 7-1 defeat at St. Lawrence on Feb. 7, 2015. It was first time the Dutchmen had been shutout since a 2-0 loss at Colgate on Feb. 20, 2014.
 
The Dutchmen skated to a 4-4 draw with Princeton last Friday, battling back to tie the game with 3:01 remaining in regulation on Ryan Scarfo's team-leading 11th tally of the season. Sebastian Vidmar registered the first multi-goal game and second multi-point game of his career and Spencer Foo chipped in with a pair of assists. In goal, Jake Kupsky made a career-high 28 saves.
 
YOU THINK WE NEED ONE MORE //
Union played its ninth overtime game of the season in Friday's 4-4 tie at Princeton, tying them for the most in Division I. The Dutchmen's two overtime wins are tied for third-most in the nation, while its five ties are tied for fourth-most. The Dutchmen are 2-2-5 in overtime contests this season and have gone to an extra frame in six of their last 11 contests. Union is averaging 3.00 goals per game in its five ties, placing them ninth in the country in games ending in a draw.
 
VECCHIONE'S 100TH
Mike Vecchione became Union's 26th 100-point scorer and the 13th in its Division I era with an assist on Union's first goal against Princeton. Vecchione accomplished the feat in 96 games, beating Daniel Carr's record of 115 games to become the fastest player in Union history to reach the milestone. Vecchione ranks seventh on the program's all-time assist list with 62. His 1.04 points per game and 0.65 assists per game average for his career currently places third in program history. Vecchione is tied for the team high with 11 assists on the season and ranks second with 16 points.
 
SUPER MAN //
Brett Supinski produced his first career multi-point game in last Friday's 4-4 tie against Princeton. In his first season with the Dutchmen Supinski has amassed 12 points on four goals and eight assists and is tied for the team lead with two game-winning goals and a +5 rating. His two game-winners are tied for second among Division I rookies, while his  plus/minus rating is tied for 11th.
 
FASHIONABLY LATE
The Dutchmen have scored 40 of their 59 goals (67.85%) this season in the final 10 minutes of a period, which is tied for seventh in the nation, while its 15 goals in the final 10 minutes of the first is tied for third.
 
SPECIAL TEAMS WOES //
After closing out 2015 with one of the top penalty kills in the nation, the Dutchmen have struggled to find that same success in 2016. Through its last four games Union is just 12-for-18 on the penalty kill (66.7%) and it has allowed three short-handed goals. Union's penalty kill is 65-of-77 (84.4%) on the season, while its power play is 15-of-90 (16.7%).
 
CAREER VS. THE RAIDERS //
Vecchione has been the team's top performer against Colgate over the last three seasons, notching two goals and two assists in five career games against the Raiders. Matt Wilkins have produced seven points in seven games against Colgate on a goal and three assists and Jeff Taylor has contributed three assists in three games.
 
CAREER VS. THE BIG RED //
Wilkins has led the way for Union against Cornell, putting up four goals and four assists in nine career games against the Big Red. Vecchione has contributed six points on three goals and three assists in seven career games against Cornell and Eli Lichtenwald has recorded a goal and four assists in seven games
 
 
THE COLGATE SERIES
SCOUTING COLGATE //
Colgate enters Friday's game with a record of 6-14-1 and 2-6-1 in ECAC Hockey. The Raiders, who are 1-4-0 in their last five games, have just two wins in their last 12 (2-9-1) contests. They are 3-6-1 on the road and 2-3-0 in ECAC Hockey away games.
 
SERIES AGAINST COLGATE //
Union is 18-33-3 against Colgate in its Division I era and has won just one of the last six against the Raiders (1-4-1). The Raiders won both meetings between the two teams last year, notching a 5-4 win at Messa Rink on Jan. 17 before blanking the Dutchmen, 2-0, on Feb. 20. Daniel Ciampini tallied twice and Max Novak and Jeff Taylor each dished out two assists in the 5-4 defeat. The Dutchmen's last win against Colgate was a 5-2 victory in the ECAC Championship game on March 22, 2014. Daniel Carr registered a goal and two assists, while Ciampini, Novak and Matt Hatch chipped in with a goal and an assist each. 
 
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS //
The Raiders are led by Tyson Spink, who ranks tied for second in ECAC Hockey with 15 assists and third with 24 points. Tylor Spink is second on the team with 14 assists and 18 points, while Borkowski is tied for the team-high with nine goals and sits third with 12 points. Junior goaltender Charlie Finn has logged the majority of minutes in goal, going 5-14-1 with a 3.63 GAA and a .887 save pct. Hamilton has appeared in three games this season, posting a .872 save percentage and a 3.53 goals against average.
 

THE CORNELL SERIES
SCOUTING CORNELL //
Cornell enters the weekend with a record of 11-2-2 and 6-1-1 in ECAC Hockey with both of its losses on the season coming against top-10 opponents. Cornell fell 5-4 at home against then No. 4/5 Quinnipiac on Nov. 7 and was routed 8-0 by then #9/9 Ohio State in the championship game of the Florida College Classic on Dec. 29. The eight-goal defeat was the team's worst loss since falling 10-0 to Quinnipiac in the ECAC Hockey quaterfinal on March. 16, 2013. Cornell, which is 8-1-2 in its last 11 games, takes on No. 20 Rensselaer on Friday, Jan. 15.

SERIES AGAINST CORNELL //
Cornell leads the series the all-time series in Union's Division I era, 26-19-6, but the Dutchmen have found success against the Big Red recently, going 5-2 in the last seven meetings. Cornell won both of the regular season matchups between the two teams last season, winning 5-1 at Messa Rink  on Jan. 16 and edging out a 2-1 win at home on Feb. 21. Union redeemed itself in the first round of the ECAC Hockey playoffs, topping the Big Red 4-2 in the first game before routing Cornell, 7-0, in game two. Matt Wilkins produced a goal and three assists and Spencer Foo had a pair of goals in the 7-0 victory, while Mike Vecchione had a goal and an assist in both games.
 
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS //
Jeff Kubiak leads the Big Red with 10 assists, 16 points and a +15 rating, which is tied for third in ECAC Hockey and 20th in Division I. Anthony Angello leads the team with eight goals and is second with 14 points and Mitch Vanderlaan is third with 11 points on four goals and seven assists. Angello's three game-winning goals are tops among Division I freshmen, his 0.93 points per game average places him eighth, while eight tallies are the tied for ninth among rookies. He has potted two game-winning goals against ECAC Hockey foes this season, tying him for tops in the league, Mitch Gillam has appeared in all 15 games in goal, posting an 11-2-2 record. Gillam is tied for fifth in Division I with four shutouts, eighth with a 1.77 GAA and ninth with a .935 save percentage.
