Union defeats Allegheny

HILTON HEAD, SC – The Union College women's tennis team swept singles play en route to a 7-2 win over Allegheny College on Friday afternoon.

None of the six Dutchwomen lost a set in singles play, as Cathy Zing led the group winning her No. 6 match without losing a point, and Alissa Sangiuolo followed closely with conceding only a single point in her first set of the No. 4 match.

Natalia Pezzuco won her No. 1 singles match, 6-2, 6-1, while teammate Megan Brown took the No. 2 singles match, 6-0, 6-2. Julianne Loree won the No. 3 match, 6-4, 6-1, and Madeleine Hamparian rounded out singles action in the No. 5 match with a 6-4, 6-3, win.

Sarah Collins and Phoebe Hallahan partnered for their first collegiate wins as they took the No. 3 doubles match, 8-4.

The Dutchwomen will finish off the spring break schedule with two duals tomorrow, March 24, taking on Virginia Wesleyan and the University of St. Thomas.

Maddie Hamparian: 5' 3"; Sophomore; I chose Union primarily for its outstanding academic reputation. When visiting the college, I sat in on an upper level Political Science course and decided after that this was the school for me. In addition, Union's alumni connection and extracurricular opportunities made my choice even easier.

Sarah Collins: 5' 3"; Sophomore; I chose to attend Union because of its prestigious academic reputation and its unique trimester system. I loved that Union offered a variety of extracurriculars, from Greek life, to clubs, to athletics. I also loved Union's campus and its small size, so professors could get to know students.

Megan Holmes: 5' 5"; Sophomore; As soon as I set foot on Union’s campus, I knew it was the right place for me. After my interview at the admissions office, the interviewer had assured me that the strong sciences, diverse study abroad programs, and campus culture were exactly what I was looking for. In the end, Union was the only school where I applied!

Julianne Loree: 5' 3"; Senior; I chose to attend Union because of its beautiful campus and focused academics. I was also intrigued by the trimester system and the ability to really dive into fewer classes per term compared to semester schools. Lastly, the abroad programs offered (specifically London) had caught my attention from the beginning, and I was able to pursue off-campus studies in London my junior spring.

Tal Pezzuco: 5' 0"; Sophomore; During the college process, my senior year of high school, I was looking for a school that would allow me to do two things: be an engineer and be a tennis player. Most of the D1 schools had vigorous tennis programs that would have made it very difficult for me to do well in my engineering class. But most of the small, D3 schools were strictly liberal arts and did not offer engineering classes. I chose Union because it allowed me to everything that I enjoyed.

Allison Remmell: 5' 4"; Sophomore; I chose to attend Union because of its strong academic reputation, as well as the overall quality of the school. I felt so welcomed by all of the students at Union College, and immediately knew that I wanted to be a part of this incredible community.

Megan Brown: 5' 9"; First Year; I chose to attend Union because it was a perfect combination of everything I was looking for in a college education: great academics, countless opportunities for students with all areas of interests and a continuation of my passion for tennis. Each time I visited, the faculty and students were so welcoming – I immediately felt like I belonged.

Alissa Sangiuolo: 5' 2"; First Year; I chose to attend Union because unlike any other school I visited, Union had an overwhelming sense of a tight-knit community that I wanted to be a part of. Additionally, the draw of being recruited to play tennis definitely influenced my decision to attend Union College, as I love not only the sport but also being a part of a group.
