GENEVA, N.Y. – Members of the Union College women's tennis team won five of its six opening-round matches on day one of the ITA Northeast Regional Championships, hosted by William Smith College on Saturday at the HWS Tennis Center and Bristol Field House.
In singles play, three of Union's four entries won their opening round matches. Senior
Paige Webster came back to defeat Rutgers-Camden's Danielle Lemma in a supertiebreaker, 3-6, 6-0, (10-6), while junior
Tal Pezzuco had no trouble with Brockport's Autumne Venturino in a 6-0, 6-0 win. Sophomore
Megan Brown also put up a double bagel against Brockport's Elizabeth Bean. Sophomore
Samantha Siegel suffered Union's only first-round loss, falling 6-1, 6-2 to University of Rochester's Camila Garcia.
The second round did not go as well for the Dutchwomen, with all three entries falling in straight sets to seeded foes. Webster fell 6-4, 6-0 to top-seeded Risa Fukushige of Skidmore College, while Pezzuco dropped a 6-4, 6-1 match to 14th-seeded Katrine Luddy of The College of New Jersey's. Brown fell to TCNJ's ninth-seeded Alyssa Baldi in a close match, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles play, Brown and Siegel started off with an 8-4 win over Manhattanville College's Samantha Altman and Renay Charley, while Pezzuco and Webster bested RIT's Shayna Ginster and Amelia Ying, 8-3. Both teams succumbed to New York University squads in the second round, with Brown and Siegel falling 8-4 to the fourth-seeded tandem of Coco Kulle and Flyora Shiyanova and Pezzuco and Webster dropping a close 8-6 decision to Judy Kam and Kate Shaffer.
The Dutchwomen will return to the courts tomorrow for consolation bracket action.
