GENEVA, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team took part in day one of the ITA Northeast Regional Championships on Saturday, held at the Hobart and William Smith Tennis Center and Bristol Field House.
The Dutchwomen sent four singles entries and two doubles tandems to Geneva for the weekend, finishing the day with a pair of singles wins.
Senior
Tal Pezzuco picked up one victory on the day, as she defeated Sravya Gudipudi of the University of Rochester in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. The senior then fell to second-seeded Alex Mednikova of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the second round, dropping a 6-4, 6-3 decision.
Junior
Megan Brown also advanced into the second round, coming back to defeat RPI's Tess Lubin in a supertiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7. Brown also was defeated by a ranked opponent in the next round, however, as she fell to 10th-seeded Miriam Gandham of Vassar College, 6-1, 6-0.
Freshmen
Marilena Karadimou and
Sophie Brown both represented the Dutchwomen in singles play as well, with Karadimou falling to Vassar's Frances Cornwall, 6-2, 6-4, and Brown ending up on the wrong end of a 6-2, 7-5 match against RPI's Chloe Barr.
Union also had two tough doubles challenges on Saturday, going up against two of the top-four seeds. Brown and Brown fought against the top-seeded tandem from New York University, Anastasiia Balyk and Anna Maria Buraya, before falling, 8-2, while Pezzuco and Karadimou were dropped by fourth-seeded Risa Fukushige and Chanhtel Thongphok of Skidmore College by the same 8-2 score.
Union will begin dual match and Liberty League play next weekend, beginning on Friday when the Dutchwomen host Bard College for a 4 p.m. match at the Union Tennis Courts.
