SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team kicked off the 2019-20 season by hosting the annual Union Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Union Tennis Courts.
In the "A" singles bracket, senior
Tal Pezzuco and junior
Megan Brown both won their first-round matches before losing in the semifinals. Pezzuco defeated RPI's Rani Jones, 8-4, while Brown took down Holy Cross' Sophia Papa by an 8-5 score. RPI's Alex Mednikova took the title with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Holy Cross' Maddie DeNucci.
Freshman
Sophie Brown took third place in the "B" singles bracket, starting with a 8-5 defeat of Juliana Herrera of Nichols College in the first round. After falling in the semifinals, she rebounded for an 8-5 win over Nichols' Megan Nathanson in the third-place match. On the other side of the bracket, classmate
Marilena Karadimou lost her first match to eventual champion Sanjana Surapeneni of RPI, but came back with two consolation wins on Saturday to take fifth place.
Fellow freshman
Monet Riseborough took third place in the "C" singles bracket, earning an 8-0 win over Holy Cross' Lanie Olsen in her first match before falling to eventual champion Krisia Flores of RPI in the semifinals. Junior
Samantha Siegel took seventh in the bracket thanks to an 8-7 (7-5) win over Olsen.
Senior
Allison Remmell earned fifth place in the "D" singles bracket, overcoming a first-round loss to post a pair of wins in Saturday's consolation bracket, including a 8-7 (7-4) win over Holy Cross' Megan O'Melveny in the fifth-place match. Junior
Cathy Xing placed seventh in the bracket as well for Union.
Pezzuco and Karadimou placed fourth in the "A" doubles bracket, defeating a Nichols tandem by an 8-7 (7-3) score in the first round before falling to the eventual champions from RPI in a 10-8 tiebreaker. The Dutchwomen tandem of Brown and Brown made the consolation finals in the bracket before settling for sixth place.
One Union entry earned a win in the "B" doubles bracket, with Riseborough and sophomore
Dana D'Onofrio posting an 8-7 (7-3) win over a Holy Cross pairing.
Union will return to the courts next weekend, when the team heads north to St. Lawrence University for the Canton Classic on Saturday and Sunday.
