POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Union women's cross country team started the 2021 season with a third-place finish at the Vassar Season Starter, held Wednesday evening at Vassar Farm.
Union took third place out of the four teams in the 3k race with 68 points, with three top-15 finishers. The team finished ahead of Bard (102), but behind Vassar (26) and New Paltz (46).
Returning only two upperclassmen to the team this year, the Dutchwomen were paced by its underclassmen. Leading the way was sophomore Allison Malatesta, who secured a sixth-place finish with a time of 12:09.6 in her collegiate cross country debut. First-years Catherine Dacey and Keelin Virgulto were also top-15 finishers in their collegiate debuts with times of 12:31.0 and 12:38.7, respectively.
Sophomore Alayna Gibson clocked a top-20 finish with a time of 12:47.0, earning 17th place. Fellow sophomore Sophie Chesnut also put forward a strong performance in her debut, finishing 23rd with a time of 13:32.1.
Union returns to action on Saturday, September 11 when they travel to Loudonville, N.Y. for the Siena College Invitational.
