GENEVA, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team faced tough competition on day one of the ITA Northeast Regionals, hosted by William Smith College on Saturday.

Sophie Brown hung tough against #9-16 seeded Sofie Shen of Vassar College before falling, 6-4, 6-3. Sophomore
Gracie Nicol also ran up against a seeded opponent in the first round, as she fell to Rensselaer's Rani Jones by a 6-0, 6-1 score.

Marilena Karadimou nearly took the first set from William Smith's Maggie Bonomo before falling in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0. Senior
Dana D'Onofrio also took part for Union, dropping a 6-1, 6-2 match to Skidmore's Katherine Almquist.
Both of Union's doubles entries suffered first-round losses as well on Saturday. Karadimou and Nicol fell to Brittany Waugh and Giada Zorzan of New Jersey City, 8-2, while Brown and D'Onofrio dropped an 8-3 match to Shannon Cicero and Kat Roberts of Hamilton.
Union will have its first dual match and first Liberty League contest of the season on Wednesday, when the Dutchwomen host Bard College beginning at 4 p.m. at the Union Tennis Courts.
