Box Score 2 CANTON, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team finished up a successful weekend at the St. Lawrence Invitational, earning three of the four finals berths and seeing several excellent performances on Saturday and Sunday at the Sammis Tennis Courts.
The event was held in the style of the Billie Jean King Cup, with teams playing a doubles match and two singles matches to determine the advancing team.
In the "A" Flight, the tandem of senior
Marilena Karadimou and junior
Gracie Nicol opened with a 2-1 win over Kylie Seiler and Alex Galle of SUNY Geneseo. After teaming up for an 8-4 doubles win, Karadimou secured the victory with an 8-1 singles win over Seiler. The pair then swept RIT in the semifinals, beginning with an 8-4 doubles win over Kirsten Auble and Jackie Drozd before individual wins by Nicol (8-3) and Karadimou (8-0). Their run came up short in the finals, falling to Catherine Gamble and Molly Jespersen of St. Lawrence.
Union's other entry earned a first-round win in the "A" flight as well, sweeping RIT. First-years
Chara Meidani and
Kennedy Alexis earned an 8-4 doubles win to start off against RIT, followed by Alexis and sophomore
Gabby Gatto both picking up 8-4 singles victories. After falling to St. Lawrence in the semifinals, Alexis and Gatto won the third-place match over RIT's Auble and Drozd, ekeing out an 8-7 doubles win before Gatto clinched the victory with an 8-3 singles triumph.
Union saw more success in the "B" Flight, with three entries reaching the semifinals that resulted in an all-Union final.
First-years
Claire Langille and
Skylar Semon came away with the title, posting three victories. The pair swept Abigail Sicuranza and Alexandra Fuller of St. Lawrence in the first round, dropping only one game in each singles win, before another sweep of another SLU pair, Elena Styliades and Gabriella Dadoly, in the semifinals.
In the all-Union final, the pair squeezed out another sweep of seniors
Hallie Katzman and
Rayna Katzman. The doubles match went to a tiebreaker with the first-years winning 9-7 over the seniors, while Langille (8-2) and Semon (8-5) posted singles wins as well to complete the sweep.
The Katzman sisters teamed with first-year
Sydney Alphabet to record two wins of their own to reach the finals. The trio swept Meghan Heeney and Alexandra Suslan of SUNY Geneseo with only two games lost to reach the semifinals; Hallie earned both an 8-1 doubles win alongside her sister and an 8-0 singles win, while Alphabet added an 8-1 singles win of her own. Kate Hirnak, squeezing out a 2-1 win behind two wins from Rayna in doubles (8-2 alongside Alphabet) and in singles (8-4).

Paige Tromblee earned a first-round win of their own against Devon Mills and Abby Finchum of RIT, dropping only three games in a 3-0 sweep.
Union will take part in the ITA Northeast Regionals next weekend beginning on Friday at Hamilton College.
