CLINTON, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team had one singles and one doubles entry win first-round matchups on the first day of the 2022 ITA Northeast Regional Championships, hosted by Hamilton College at the Tietje Family Tennis Center on Friday.
 
The first-year tandem of Kennedy Alexis and Chara Meidani picked up a win on the first day of doubles play, knocking off Claire Cutler and Hannah Walpole of SUNY Geneseo by an 8-4 score. The team will play The College of New Jersey's Aira Abalos and Anusha Rangu, who upset the top-seeded tandem from RPI today, tomorrow at 9 a.m.
 
Union also had four entries in singles play on Friday. Sophomore Gabby Gatto had the lone victory for Union on the day, as she made quick work of Rochester's Stephanie Kim in a 6-0, 6-2 win. She returned later in the day to take on #9-16 seed Tatum Blalock of Vassar, but fell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
 
Junior Gracie Nicol also had a good effort against Union's lone seeded opponent of the opening round, falling 7-5 in the first set before succumbing by a 6-2 score in the second to #5-8 seed Karina Jensrud of New York University. Meidani fell 6-1, 6-0 to Maya Lal of Skidmore College and senior Marilena Karadimou dropped a pair of 6-1 sets to Hamilton College's Shannon Cicero in the early matches as well for Union.
 
In other doubles action, Karadimou and Nicol came up one break short to Macey Dowd and Elyse Duley of Vassar College in an 8-5 defeat.
 
Union will return to action tomorrow for second round and consolation bracket competition beginning at 9 a.m.
