GENEVA, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team opened up the 2023-24 season on Saturday with day one action at the Mary Hosking Invitational, hosted by William Smith College at the HWS Tennis Center.
The highlight of the day from Union came in the "C" Singles flight, where sophomores
Claire Langille and
Skylar Semon both won twice to reach the semifinals. Langille started her day with an 8-6 win over Lauren Rodriguez, then took down Grace Magna by an 8-3 score. Semon, meanwhile, did not lose a game on the day, posting consecutive 8-0 victories over Elena Styliades and Alessandra Agnello.
Sophomore
Kennedy Alexis also reached the semifinals of the "D" Singles flight, posting back-to-back 8-4 victories over Mia Tetrault and Abigail Sicuranza.
Langille and Semon also remained undefeated with a pair of wins in the "B" Doubles bracket, posting an 8-2 win over Philiasophia Wood and Abby Finchum of RIT and an 8-0 sweep of Rochester's Jasmin Toor and Jaclyn Dron to reach the semifinals there as well.
In "B" Singles action, junior
Gabby Gatto started off with an 8-2 win over Rory Tobin before falling to Lauren Kallas in the quarterfinals, 8-5.
After falling in their first-round matches, both senior
Gracie Nicol and sophomore
Chara Meidani earned wins in the opening round of the "A" Singles consolation bracket, with Nicol taking down Natalie Pipes, 8-3, and Meidani outlasting Alexandra Galle, 8-6. The pair also earned an 8-0 win over Ali Klee and Sarah Stone of Nazareth in the consolation "A" Doubles bracket.
First-year
Luisa Arizpe Sierra also earned her first career singles win with an 8-1 victory over Ali Klee in the "B" Singles consolation bracket, and sophomore
Sydney Alphabet also earned a consolation win in the "D" Singles bracket by defeating Victoria Cioni, 8-1.
The Garnet Chargers will return to the courts tomorrow for day two action at the St. Lawrence Invitational beginning at 9 a.m.
