Sheldon Sets High Jump Record at Utica Winter Opener

UTICA, N.Y. - After breaking the Union College women's track & field 60-meter hurdles record in her first collegiate meet at the Suffolk Relays in December, first-year Ashley Sheldon made it 2-for-2 by breaking the program's high jump record at the Utica Winter Opener on Friday.

Sheldon cleared the bar 1.62 meters up, not only shattering Hannah LaMoy's indoor record of 1.58 meters that stood nearly 19 years, but also LaMoy's program record of 1.59 meters that was set back in 2005. Sheldon blew away her competition in the event, clearing the bar at 1.52 and 1.57 meters on her first attempts before becoming the only competitor to clear the 1.62 mark, taking home first in the event.

Sheldon also finished on the podium in the 60 meter hurdles, coming in third with a 9.59 time, .03 seconds shy of the 9.56 record time she put up at her career-opening event.

Union's 4x400 team of junior Gabi Baker, senior Glory Moncion Allen, senior Caroline Stanton and first-year Kat Doran picked up another podium finish for the Garnet Chargers, finishing the relay in third with a time of 4:20.65, less than a second of the first-place team from Hamilton. The 4x200 unit of junior Marley Froe, first-year Madison Brandy, first-year Ava Partenza, and Sheldon also clinched a third-place finish, completing their relay in 1:54.44.

Baker and Froe would clinch Liberty League Indoor Championships qualifications later on in the 200 meters. Baker picked up another third place finish in the 200 meter with a 27.57 time, while Froe placed seventh in 27.92. Later on Baker locked up another LL Championship qualification for herself in the 60 meter after her fourth-place 8.32 time.

Doran would also get an individual podium placement in the 400, coming in second in 1:03.13. Doran and Moncion Allen, who finished with a 1:03.82 time, would each qualify for the Liberty League Indoor Championships.

After returning from the holiday break, the track and field programs will now have five consecutive weeks of competition, and come back to action next Saturday at the Middlebury Winter Classic.
